Nestled within the rolling foothills of the 5,000-acre Scott Ranch near Longview, Alberta, the Old Town is a meticulously crafted frontier movie set that transports visitors and film crews straight into the 1880s American West.

The Old Town: A Living Piece of the Wild West

Built by John Scott in the 1990s and expanded over decades, this authentic Western town features a main street lined with period-accurate façades: a saloon with swinging doors, a sheriff’s office, a general store, a livery stable, a bank, and a blacksmith shop—all constructed with reclaimed timber, hand-forged ironwork, and weathered wood to ensure historical fidelity. The set was originally developed for the 2000 film Monty Walsh (starring Tom Selleck) and has since starred in over 50 productions, including Heartland, Hell on Wheels, and Fargo.

What sets it apart is its working functionality—the buildings have functional interiors, the street is wide enough for stagecoach chases, and the surrounding landscape includes open plains, riverbanks, and forested ridges, all within camera range.

Unlike studio backlots, the Old Town is part of a living, breathing cattle ranch, meaning real longhorns, bison, and horses roam nearby, adding unparalleled realism. Maintained year-round by John Scott Productions, it remains one of Western Canada’s most versatile and sought-after film locations.

What Can Be Done at the Old Town

The Old Town is not just for Hollywood—it’s a fully operational venue for film and TV production, private events, weddings, corporate retreats, and immersive experiences. Film crews can rent the entire set with full access to props, livestock, wranglers, and stunt coordination led by John Scott himself. For events, the adjacent John Scott Film & Event Centre offers indoor space for up to 150 guests, while the Old Town serves as a stunning outdoor backdrop for ceremonies, receptions, or themed parties—imagine exchanging vows in front of the saloon at sunset.

Corporate groups use it for team-building cowboy challenges, horseback leadership workshops, or Western-themed galas.

Photographers and content creators book exclusive shoots, and history enthusiasts can arrange guided tours to walk the same streets as Clint Eastwood and Brad Pitt. With on-site catering, lodging options, and full production support, the Old Town transforms from a cinematic legend into a one-of-a-kind destination for any vision.
